Employers violate the law if they retaliate against an employee (firing, demotion, etc.) for reporting violations of the law (such as health and safety violations, criminal conduct or any other unlawful activity). It is also against the law to retaliate against an employee who complains to management about workplace violations (including wage and hour violations and discrimination). The laws enacted to protect employees in these situations are called "Whisleblower" statutes. Employers are also forbidden to retaliate against an employee for filling a lawsuit against them.
